Jermain Defoe on denying his sweet tooth and feeding his craving for goals with Bournemouth and England

31 Aug
2017

Jermain Defoe feels “the sacrifice” most when he wants to go to the cinema and get that big bag of popcorn, or when he’s looking at the dessert menu. For someone who admits he indulged a sweet tooth when younger, it’s hard to maintain his discipline. But it’s a sacrifice worth making, especially when he’s allowed to indulge something he loves more than anything else: his hunger for goals. “There is no better feeling,” he says.

It does not just represent a change in conditioning for Defoe, but also perpetuates a different perception of the player that is worth reflecting on. The 34-year-old has gone from someone seen as prematurely ending his top-level career by moving to Toronto FC in 2014 to someone since seen as the best example in how to prolong it, given his sharpness at that age.

Jermain Defoe will inspire Bournemouth team-mates this season – Martin Keown

14 Aug
2017

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has claimed that new Bournemouth signing Jermain Defoe will inspire his team-mates this season.

Defoe joined Bournemouth on a free transfer this summer and, even at the age of 34, remains prolific in front of goal.

Keown told BBC Sport: “There is a sharpness to Jermain Defoe’s play that he has always had. He is hungry, he wants to keep proving that point. Eventually, I think it will get the better of him, but let’s take a look at him after the first two or three games. They have got a good man in the camp there. You get inspired by people around you and everyone wants to see Defoe in action.”

Jermain Defoe dreaming of a place in England's World Cup 2018 squad after getting started at Bournemouth

Jermain Defoe is dreaming of a place in England’s World Cup squad. The 34-year-old Bournemouth striker is looking to bag himself a seat on the plane to Russia and has admits it is already in the back of his mind.

Defoe said: “It’s only normal to have one eye on the World Cup. Every English player will want to get in to that squad but it’s based on merit, so you’ll have to play well for your club. I’ll focus on doing that and then if I get the opportunity to play in the World Cup again, it would be a dream.”

"It's the sort of pressure when you're in a penalty shootout and the lads are waiting for you to step up," he said.

It is a family affair at the Jermain Defoe Foundation football tournament in Romford. As they spend bank holiday Monday seeking to raise funds for their work in St Lucia, the entire clan is busy helping. There’s Jermain himself presenting the prizes to winning teams, posing for selfies, signing junior football shirts. There’s his cousin volunteering as tournament co-ordinator. And there, next to the merchandise stand where signed adidas balls are selling fast, is the cake stall, staffed by his mother.
